My Roller Setting Lotion Cocktail Mix

First, let me say, "My name is Candra Evans and I am a hair product junkie." (Smile)

My hair pantry is filled with conditioners, setting lotions, oils, and such. So in light of that, it is easy for me to play the mixologist with hair products.

For those hair products that did not work well on their own, I sometimes mix them with other products to make a better product! If you have a stash of this and that, and you want to use them up, hair cocktails can be fun to try.

Disclaimer: Before mixing products it is very important to read the ingredients of each individual hair product. Understand what each product is formulated to do on its own before mixing them together. Make sure that the end product is offering something that meets your hair needs.

Diane Mesh Rollers on Amazon
Now for my new roller setting lotion cocktail mix!

My hair is severely dry so I have spent months searching for the perfect setting lotion for my hair. Products that others raved about just wasn't working for me. I did not try every setting lotion on the market but I tried enough to give up.

So for awhile I abandoned setting lotions and only used conditioner and jojoba oil. Using a conditioner and oil helped with maintaining some softness, but my curls fell pretty quickly.

So back to the drawing board I went. But, it wasn't cost effective to keep buying one brand of setting lotion after the other. I have enough half filled bottles in my pantry.

So, I searched YouTube (naturally) to see if other ladies were having the same issue. Maybe I could use something I already have in stock. I found a video by YouTuber loulaysious. I took her setting lotion recipe and adjusted it based on what I had in my hair pantry.

I believe this cocktail works for my hair because each product focuses on either moisture or hold… two things that I was desperately lacking in my roller sets.

Using a plastic water spray bottle…

I filled 3/8 of the bottle with Softsheen Carson Dark and Lovely Healthy-Gloss 5 Leave-In Treatment
I filled 1/4 of the bottle with Nutress Wrap-Guard Foam Wrap Lotion
I filled 1/8 of the bottle with Lusti Organics Olive Oil Detangling Spray
I filled the rest (1/4) of the bottle with water

The Dark and Lovely Leave-In Treatment and Nutress Foam Wrap can be found in stores or online. I purchased the Lusti Organics Olive Oil Detangling Spray at the Dollar Tree.

The Pros…

My hair stays very moisturized and soft after my hair is dry (Healthy Gloss 5 leave-in treatment)
Detangling and smoothing each section with my comb is easy (detangling spray)
My curls are smooth and defined (foam wrap lotion)
My hair has a lot of body and movement

The Con…

My drying time seems to take an extra 15 to 20 minutes compared to using only water and conditioner…but in exchange for soft hair that is not dry and breaking the next day, I can live with that.

If you do not have these exact products in your stash, I would assume that comparable products would have similar results. The key is defining what your hair needs to achieve the desired result, and identifying what products are formulated to meet the need.

The total ounces of the leave-in treatment, wrap lotion, detangling spray and water combined will ensure that I will not run out of setting lotion any time soon. More money saved!

Overall I am relieved and happy that I can achieve the roller set that I have always wanted! No more dry roller sets!

Blessings and Happy Mixing!

Add Some Rest To Your “Relax”ation

When I get my hair relaxed, the relaxer is adding stress to my strands in order to achieve a straighter texture that will last. So, two weeks before and two weeks after I get a relaxer I keep hair manipulation to a minimum and let my hair rest.

My R&R relaxer routine includes low manipulation styles and protective styles. Low manipulation styles are styles that require minimum handling.

Protective styles are styles that keep the oldest parts of our hair, the ends, tucked away and protected from clothing, wind, rain, sun and anything else that could be damaging.

Styling my hair in such a way that requires minimum day to day maintenance allows my hair to rest before the relaxer, and to recover well after the relaxer.

Rest for my hair also means no direct heat, no excessive re-twisting and re-braiding, very little combing, and keeping wash days simple yet effective. I have learned over time that I get the best relaxer results when I leave my hair alone for awhile and stray away from hair tools, accessories, and styles that could cause my hair to become too weak to take the relaxer process.

Before and after my relaxer treatments I incorporate protein treatments to strengthen my hair since the relaxer is breaking down the natural protein bonds of the hair shaft.  Rest and low manipulation allows the protein conditioning treatments to restore my hair freely without interference.

Adding rest to my “relax”ation process also gives my scalp a chance rest. You do not want to do a lot of combing, pulling, and brushing at the scalp right before getting a relaxer. This could cause scalp irritation during the relaxer process.

Over all I baby my hair and treat it very gently near relaxer time. It has paid off well to let it lay, breath, and truly relax.

Happy Hair Growing!

My Hair Feels Lush! #CoconutOilChallenge Week Two Update!

As I head into the third week of Hairlista's Coconut Oil Challenge, I can already see a change...Hallelujah! :D

I shouldn't be surprised to get such lush and rich results from using a product that is organic and God-given. Over the last week I have received so many compliments regarding the thickness, length, and softness of my hair.

I give credit to the hair journey in general, but incorporating coconut oil to my regimen the way I have has been the icing on the cake.

Even after running in 70 and 80 degree temperatures, my hair holds up wonderfully. It retains its moisture and softness. I let down my pony tail and it falls right back into its roller-wrapped style. This never happens!

The advanced level of the challenge calls for two deep conditions with coconut oil each week. This has probably been the most difficult part of the challenge. Usually I am either too busy, too tired, or both. Yet, the sacrifice of an extra deep condition is amazing.

On top of the basic requirements for the challenge, I have also been sealing my hair with coconut oil at least four days a week. I do it lightly, but it still holds in the moisture well.

Here is a quick review of my coconut oil challenge regimen and coconut oil benefits!

Coconut Oil Benefits

1. Coconut is easy to find and all natural (Use organic, unrefined coconut oil)
2. Conditions Hair
3. Decreases Shedding
4. Promotes Hair Growth
5. Fights Against Dandruff and Other Scalp Issues
6. Prevents Breakage
7. Prevents Split Ends

In order to comply with the advanced level of the challenge, I have put together the following regimen for this challenge.

My Summer Regimen With Coconut Oil

Tuesday & Saturday
  • Apply coconut oil to hair and scalp for 1 hour or longer before washing hair...(include scalp massage)
  • Add 2 teaspoons of coconut oil to my moisturizing deep conditioner...sit under heated dryer for 20 minutes
Monday & Wednesday & Friday
  • Apply coconut oil lightly to scalp only and massage
  • Moisturize hair and seal lightly with coconut oil

Do you incorporate coconut oil in your hair regimen?

My Summer Regimen Using Coconut Oil

Week one of Hairlista's Coconut Oil Challenge is almost complete! This challenge will run through Saturday, August 23rd so it's not too late to participate.

Here is a recap of the advance level requirements for the challenge...

ADVANCE:
  • Apply Coconut oil to your hair and scalp, prior to washing, for 20mins – 1 hour or overnight. Massage it in focusing on damaged areas. Proceed with regular washday routine. Do this 2x/week.
  • Apply 1-2 tsp of Coconut Oil to your weekly deep conditioner with heat. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Apply Coconut oil to your scalp 2-3x/week. Do not rinse.
  • (OPTIONAL) Seal with Coconut oil on wet or dry hair.

If you are not a big fan of using coconut oil on your tresses then maybe the Basic or Intermediate level may work for you. (Check the link below for more info.)

You can also choose a favorite oil of your choice to add to your pre-poos and conditioners for added hair nourishment.

Just a Few Benefits of Coconut Oil:

1. Coconut is easy to find and all natural (Use organic, unrefined coconut oil)
2. Conditions Hair
3. Decreases Shedding
4. Promotes Hair Growth
5. Fights Against Dandruff and Other Scalp Issues
6. Prevents Breakage
7. Prevents Split Ends

When reviewing the benefits of coconut oil, taking part in this challenge for the summer is a win-win!

I will try this schedule for the month of June and if necessary, do some tweaking. Now of course I have to make sure that this all falls in line with the styles I would like to wear. This may be tough going for three months, but that's why they call it challenge!

What are your thoughts on my current summer regimen? Do you incorporate coconut oil in your hair regimen?

Happy Hair Growing, Love, and Blessings!

A Journey For More Than Long Hair

long hair
May 19, 2014

After thirteen weeks of stretching, I went to my stylist to get a much needed trim and to have my new growth texlaxed.

Overall, I was only able to retain about an inch of growth in three months. My normal hair growth rate is between 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch per month.

While I am always searching for effective ways to increase my growth rate, I remember that this journey is more than long hair and length checks.

If you are on a journey for long hair, retaining an inch in three months could be a bad thing. I admit that I had hoped to retain more, but I can't help but look at the big picture.

This journey is so much more than long hair...

My hair is not full arm pit length yet, but it looks so much better. It is not dry, breaking, or shedding like a German Shepherd in June. It is much healthier than it was even six months ago.

My stylist says that it feels different now. She has been my stylist for four years, and her hands know my hair very well. It was happiness to my heart for her, who knows the trials my hair has been through, to be so pleased.

She was amazed at how well my scalp is thriving. I have had severe issues with flakes and dryness all of my life. So much to the point that it was recommended over and over again that I see a dermatologist. The health of my scalp today is amazing in comparison.

I have seriously been through the storm with my hair, so hallelujah for the sunshine!

This hair journey is about giving myself the best care inside and out. It is about loving myself and feeling good about who I am.

The video below reveals my length before and after my hair trim. Yes, I had hoped to retain more length, but you will still see me smiling because there has been so much progress on this hair journey. I am very please and I feel so blessed to have come this far.

Love and Blessings!
